Ombattu Gudda - Part 1
This place is near Sakleshpur in Karnataka and is located among the ever green forests of western ghats. You must be well prepared before going to these forest reagion as people say that you are bound to get lost in the forests.
I was totally unaware of these facts, all I know is that I love the forests and trekking and would go anywhere for these, so when Gaurav asked me if I would like to go in for this trek my instant reply was "why not", then he said that theres a group going there and the leader seems to be a guy called Chandrashekhar, so go ahed call him up and he asks a lot of questions so just say yes yes . As he said chandrashekhar was asking a lot of questions , like:
Do you often go for treks?
Can you climb
are you in good physical condition , blah blah blah.... I told that I have been to Himalayas and I can trek thats it , then he says : "Its the toughest trek in Karnataka". I said ok no probs.
He gave me a green signal , said that we all would meet near Majestic and from there we would catch a bus, as planned we all reached there by Friday night 9.30 and took our places in the but, I was still wondering why do these ppl always make so much fuss before including people in treks as its always about climbing and nothing else, with these thoughts I went to sleep, in the morning we were in Hassan , from where we went to Sakleshpur had breakfast, packed our food for two days and then went ahead to a place where we had to start our trek for Ombattu Gudda. We had taken the help of two local guys who would be helping us in trekking and help us in finding our way through the forest, moreover we had a forest department guy also along with us so that he would help us in case we got lost in the forest or to prevent us from getting lost .
The trek begins: its 10.30 in the morning , we have to cover a long distance to the peak so that we can camp over there at night, our walk starts, the path seems good , after some time jungle starts, its really green and beautiful, we have walked almost 2 kms , till now thing look really great, we are clicking a lot of pics, a small stream comes, the water looks very good, I cant resist my self and have a sip of really feresh water , I cross the stream and walk ahead Gaurav and me are walking almost at the frost of the group we are leading the way, all of a sudden Gaurav feels something is there at his feet , he look down and says " Abe leach hai , aur bahut sara hai yaar " . I look at his shoes and his feet , I see a lot of leaches, there are so many of them , crawling and trying to suck his blood, then I have a look at my feet and SHIT I have the same thing on my feet , the intreting thing with leeches is that they can climb and cling on to you and drink your blood and you dont feel a thing , no pain only some blood loss.
We hurridly pulled these leaches away from the shows and feet and started moving forward, then I look in towards the fround I see its full of leaches.
For some time after that I tried getting rid of these but it was of no awail, moreover we were loosing the rithm of our walk so I thought come what ever may I am going to continue my walk and now bother about these creatures anymore. I would have walked ony a few feet when I saw people staring at something , I also had a glimpse at it , only to find out that its a SCORPION, hurridly I took 3-4 snaps of the cute looking guy and said bye bye to it. The locals were walking very fast and I wanted to be with them so I started walkingat the same pace as one of the local guys in front , after some time I realised that all others were left behind and only we two were leading the way, the forst had become denser and I could not afford to loose him at any cost now. We would have walked another 3 Kms or so when he took a turn and I see a stream flowing which we had to cross, he was not bothered about look back and offering me help and I also thought that it not that though so why bother, but nothing is as easy in a jungle as it looks, the rocks that were leading me to the other end were slipperey and it was a bit deeper then expected at certain paces, moreover I had a haversack , a camera and now I had my shoes in my hand so that they dont get wet , so I was totally loaded , I took me some time and a lot of concentration but finally I reahed other end safely. Luckly the guy had stopped and afr some time I saw the rest of croud coming up , we stopped at that place and had our food.
It was already 1.30 and according to Chadru we had to hurry if we wanted to reach the place before dark.
The same storey continues for a long time , we have a nice time walking and wandering in the jungle, its about 5 in the evening and we are not reaching somewhere, we have walked almost 15Kms or more in the day , I silently tell Gaurav this looks as a great adventure but dosent seem to be tough, he agrees and we start moving again. We are at a stream and I see the guys agruing in Kannad , I guess its about the direction(I dont know Kannad), we strat climbing , I see thers no route , the local guy walking ahead of me is walking on a steep slope and he is cutting trees and some bushes to make the way, I am happily enjoiyngthis thinkng that its getting tougher now, but the paths is getting riskier , there is steep slope , no route , some mud and lot of loose rocks , we have to catch trees and climb , and some of these trees turn out to be thorney ones and I hurt my hand , I hear guys from behind calling up and asking us to slow down as they are unable to keep up with us, I look back and see no one , then I hear voices , I see some one coming and I help him in climbing up , after that we start moving forward and I ask the guy how much is left ......and he reveals me the secret "WE ARE LOST DUDE" . No one knows where we are going its getting dark now and we are clueless , have have all our sleeping bags and tents but we can never sleep in this dense forest as there is no place to lie down , moreover animals are another big threat. More cutting and cropping is done by the local guys , we were already being killed by leeaches now there is no path to walk , ver carefully I have to catch trees , so as not to injure myself, and we cant even walk straight, we have to bend down and climb on a very steep slope , but after an hour or so we see a clearing , this is the place from where water is falling down so we are near a waterfall, chandru says we cant go anyfurther and this is the place where we would be spending the night. This seems horrible(actually I was loving the location but just to add sentiments), we cant set up the tents on the rock so we will be sleeping outside on rocks on sleeping mats or sleeping bags.
I must say this was an experience of a lifetime, never in my life I thought I would be in such a place with my life in danger (wild forest all around, fear of snakes and other wild animals, as we ahd already seen Tiger and elephants shit) and I would be loving this. The locals lighted some fire and started cooking Rice and Sambhar so that we could have food at night. After food every one found a safe place to sleep, unfortunately Gaurav and me were not that lucky , we thought we wil be awake whole of the night but the night seemed to be too long , after 11 it was difficult to keep my eyes open , there was some place at the corner just before the water started falling down , I could't control mysleep so I thought of taking the risk, both of us somehow made ourselved fit into the place and tried to sleep , it was like slip and you are gone or u turn in ur dreams and roll down, I kept o thinking on these line and couldn't sleep for quiet some time, thank God the fire was still on so that animals would not come to the place, I dont know when exactly but somehow I slept and started dreaming , I saw myself rolling down the hill and shouting , I came out of my sleep shouting , Gaurav asked me what happened but then I looked around cleaned my sweat and told him "Kuch nahi so jao ". After that I slept again and woke up directly in the morning (I guess Gaurav didnt have any sleep as I think he moved out and was sitting in some corner at night). Anyways that god for the night :) , I can never forget that and THANK U CHANDRU for taking us out .

Raghurajpur ,Puri - Konark- Bhubaneshwar (Golden Triangle) Trip
For a long time had been dreaming of going to Puri - Konark and some other places in Orissa.
There are several reasons for this , first I have heard that the beaches in Puri are awesome and then that’s the only beach in India where you can see both sunrise and sunset. Apart from this I have heard about a village called Raghurajpur which has some ancinet art forms of India , the only place which still teaches on Gurukul system. Then there is Sun temple in Konark and several other temples , also Chilka lake is there which can offer awesome birds for photography.
I had earier planned for this trip but it got cancelled cause I was unable to get the tickets to the place.
This diwali I had a long leave and I was planning to goto Ranchi for 2 whole weeks, and then I thought why not take a new path , i.e go via Bhubaneshwar . And this is how I came up with the plan of visiting Orissa and those places . I took a train to Bhuvaneshwar from Bangalore and reached there at around 12'o clock at night, actually the train was supposed to reach by 6 in the evening but it got delayed by 4 hours , so I had to bring in a change to my plan also . Initially I had planneed of going to Puri directly but now I had to wait till morning for the bus, moreover a friend had told that he would come to pick me up at the station but he too ditched me , I tried calling him up but he wouldn't pick up the call .
I thought of going out and getting a holetl for the night , some people in the train had told me nearby places would have some hotels and I can reach there in an auto , I got an auto but the streets were poorly lit and he was talking me into dark streets, I had a sudden fear if he tries to rob me , but luckily the fellow was good, only difficult thing was finding a hotel at night but he helped me , we went to 4 -5 places and finally I got a hotel to spned the night and it was not costly too.
Lying alone at the night , I started planning for the coming days, I had 2 days i my hand and a lot of places in my list . The places consisted of :
1) Puri
2)Raghurajpur
3)Chilka Lake
4)Bhubaneshwar
And I didnt want to miss any of these .
So I thought of strating from puri . That was it , lights off and I am off for the day too, journey begins the next day.
Day 1: The journey starts
Bhubaneshwar to Puri:
I got up as early as 6 in the morning as I wanted to see so many places in the day and also I didn’t want to miss the sunset in Puri. Puri is only 60Kms from Bhubaneshwar but then I was travelling in the local bus, which took its own time and I was able to reach there only by 8.30Am.
As soon as I got down I tried gathering info about how to go to Raghurajpur as this place is nearest to Puri, it’s almost 20Kms from Puri but unfortunately no buses go to that place or at least I was not able to find any info regarding this. Finally I got an auto who helped me in finding a good hotel and then he took me to Raghurajpur.
Raghurajpur :
This is one of the places in India which still preserves and teaches the ancient art forms , and I guess this is the only place where still gurukul system of teaching remains alive.
There are basically two famous art forms for which this village is famous. These are:
1) Patchitra :
In this art form drawings are made on a cloth and then they are filled up with natural colors, it is said that if you cover these with glass these would last for centuries.
2) Engravings on palm leaves:
In this art form the artists engraves on palm leaves using a iron pencil and then fills up the engravings with black ink to created the drawings after this he fills these with natural colors, I was told that the colors are so good that you can even wash the drawing and still the colors would be intact.
In this village all the families are engaged in this art form and this is their source of income, this is the only place in Orissa where I found really nice and naïve people, no doubt these people were in a very poor state.
These art forms can’t be explained in writing, I have provided some pictures which can explain these art forms.

Mekadatu .. which we could never reach
I t was Friday, we had no plans as such and I was itching to get away from the town at least for a day , I asked some of my friends but they refused, finally Only Gaurav , (his relative) Manik and me agreed to go somewhere.
As we were only three guys, we thought of going to some nearby place, so that we can have fun while riding and come back and relax on Sunday. So we all agreed upon going to Mekadatu.
It is at a distance of around 85Kms from Bangalore, so we thought of leaving Bangalore by 8 in the morning.
The biking starts, we took Kanakpura road, which is in a good condition now-a-days, traffic was very less and the scenery was absolutely picturesque. Not even a single one amongst us had read much about the place and we were wondering what to doover there, moreover the place is quiet a cliché, in the sense that many ppl have been there and there are n number of blogs describing the place.
So we were discussing what and how , when all of a sudden we saw green fields anda hill at a distance, I stopped to have a few good snaps of the place, all of a sudden Gaurav asked "Trekking karega kya " , and I was like "kaha? " , he points his finger towards the hill and looks at me . I smile back and we look at Manik, who says "chalo".
This is how the plan of trek came up, we drove our bikes in the muddy road , through the fields and came nearer to hill , when we saw it was almost impossible to continue on the bike we parked it in some deserted place and started moving towards the hill. "Bhai , apne paas khana hai na pani " was the cry I heard from Manik and I realized its true, but it was too late to go back gather these and start trekking , so Gaurav suggested we go in ask the farmers in the fields for some water. Very few ppl were there, but some kind person told us that there is a hand pump at certain distance from this place, so we started moving towards the place , we had to cross the fields which had a lot of grass, and while we were moving we saw a green snake crossing the place at full speed , all of us were taken aback, for one or two seconds no one said anything but after that we were back to normal , as no one wanted to show that he’s the one who is terrified, anyways we reached the pump had some water to drink and started moving towards the mountain again.
There was no fixed route for climbing, but we could see a shepherd standing at quiet a distance from us, so our first target was to reach the fellow by somehow climbing up and then ask him how to proceed further. We has to make our way through shrubs
and bushed but we were finally able to reach the guy , we asked him the way up and he showed us a road(kacchi sadak as we call in hindi) , he told it would take us to the top.
The road was , steep and we were getting tired and Manik was feeling hungry too, we asked him to come with us for some distance and as we climbed further we had a glimpse of a house at a long distance from us , and it was there that we decided our next target . It was to reach the house and ask water from who so ever stayed there, but the building was not as close as it looked, we had to walk a lot and when we finally came near we realized it was not a House but a temple. It didn’t matter to us temple or house anything is ok as long as we get some water or food.
In the temple we saw one panditji, how helped us in quenching our thirst, there was a small pond sort of thing there so we washed ourselves and had some rest. We were quiet happy at this point, we decided of getting down in an hour or so and ride to Mekadatu. But this is when the mystery starts; it was already 4'o clock in the ev-
One good thing was all of us were interested in seeing Man Vs wild and then we remembered the Quote:"IF YOU ARE LOST IN MOUNTAINS, GO TO HIGHEST POINT AND THEN YOU CAN GET A SENSE OF DIRECTON". So accordingly we started climbing again, by this time all of us were dead tired and hungry. Luckily from the highest point we could see that , we were on the other side of the mountain , we could see the road as well as the temple where
we had taken refuge. But the was down towards the road was very steep and was passing though a dense growth of forest; we had already seen a snake there and were afraid of seeing more of the same kind. Still we didn’t want to go all the way back (moreover we were not sure abt the way back too), so we took the decision of descending down from the new path , we had hardly walked some distance when we saw a dead end , but now we were not in a shape to go up , so all of us picked up some sticks and started making the way . Gaurav to ahead of us leading the way when all of a sudden, I heardhim
scream, I ran forward to find him face to face with a giant spider that he had encountered, Manik and me started laughing and I took some good snaps of the spider, then we saw some leaches and strange insects, but luckily we were able to make the way and return to the same path which we took for going up . After that we hurried towards the bike as it was already getting dark.
Going down we sat for a while and thanked God for such a wonderful and safe trek ;), and promised Manik for more of these sorts of adventures (poor guy was on his first trek and had a terrible experience). Then we picked our bikes and moved towards Mekadatu which was still 14Kms from there but it was alre
ady dark and we could n
ever see the place so we drove back ........HAPPILY.

Biking Trip - Bangalore to Ooty

Wayanad
The list of places in wayanad can be seen at :
http://abhisheksahai.pbwiki.com/Wayanad
How did it all start for me :
Day 1)
A long week end was approaching and I didn’t know what to do , and just at the right time a mail comes in from Jitu , biking to Wayanad anyone interested .
I knew I was going in for it and instantly replied to the mail . apart from us 4 more people agreed to come , so totally we were 6 people .
Not much of planning was done , we all agreed to meet at shoppers stop as early as 6 PM Thursday evening itself at shoppers stop and that was the beginning of our journey .
Now wayanad is around 250Kms from Bangalore and we pass Mysore in between so we had a good opportunity of seeing Mysore too.
Myasore was our first stop as we thought of having a night stay over there apart from sight seeing and Maysore palace visit we had a lot of fun where JITU promised us something about shots too (now now I can’t explain too much about that , you will have to meet this person for details ) .
Day2)
Next day we got up as early as 6 in the morning , mind you I m Mr Lazy bones so it was awful too me , but then it was not so bad as I could have some good snaps of sunrise . Our journey starts , the road was good and scenic too but it took us another two hours or so to reach Bandipur National park .
Bandipur National park is an awesome place , jungle and u can easily spot some birds and animals like eleplants , monkeys and Bysons and if u very unlucky tigers too .
The problem is if all the people in a group are intrested in prhotography , no one wants to go out of the jungle , each one of us was bz with his camera and one or two who were not intrested in taking pictures thought they were models.
And luckily we spotted some flowing water and that was it , a lot of time was wasted before some one reminded us that it was prohibited to go in water and you can be fined for it . Unwillingly we left the place and started driving , it took us an hour or less to reach wayanad from there.
Edakkal Caves :
This was the first place which we visited in Wayanad , a jeep took us to the beginning of the caves , I was not very impressed by the caves as I had been to these kind of places earlier but then I kept on moving up and up and all of a sudden after the last cave I saw a path going upstairs , I started climbing it , there was a bunch of people coming down , one of them looked at me and said "hope you don’t have any girls in your group as the trek above is a bit tough" . I was pleased to hear this :) , I went down called up the guys and asked if u all want to come to the top nut only Jitu and Vineet agreed for it .
It was not an easy climb at all , the pictures will tell u the story , some places were really steep as steep as 70 aor 80 degrees , with only a few rocks to hold on and it was a bit high too , not very high. But this climb really changed my opinion, Edakkal caves is a must visit and a must climb thing .
Meenmutty Falls
If Edakkal caves was good this was even better , first thing was we were a bit tired and then me saw a group coming up to the place where we were to begin from, it looked like a simple walk through a jungle and this was the reason why I was arguing with the guide "Why to give to 3 hundred , when we can do it without you " the other one said "can we go on our own " , but no was the answer . And later on we really felt lucky taking the guide as it was not just a walk through the jungle , jungle was a part of it , and it was really steep down a hill, moreover there were some points where he alarmed us to be careful as it was really scary and dangerous over there , the other thing was that it was really steep and some ppl were on second trek of the day .
"इसकी वजेह से दिन मैं दो बार ट्रेक हो गई , मुझे साले की बातों मैं आना ही नही था " - This was Jitu cribbing and as we went down this went on increasing .
Ohh among so many things I forgot to tell you about SURYA our star yaar kalakar . He was an amazing photographer (this is what I thought until I saw his snaps later on :) ) and he was stuck on some soot or the other for taking pics or resting , we had to make sure he was in the middle because if he was left behind he was gone , we could waste a life time waiting for him to reach us .
Anyways , all the efforts were worth the site and really what an amazing site was the waterfall and the best part was that we could take bath in water , and we had a baby elephant with us who was behaving like a fish and never wanted to come out of water .
And this was the end of day 2 for us , took a great home stay खाना खाया और बत्ती बुझा दी ।
Day3)
Chembra peka :
2100 mts in height and a great climb , this was the whole thing which we did on day three . It was a great climb and after so much of work on the previous day it was an awesome experience reaching the top of the peak , lucky enough it was a cloudy day and it started raining while we were climbing down .
Important Note :
Our Star SURYA got left behind and was never able to catch us , I am not saying that we didn’t wait for him , we waited a lot only to see him appearing
from a peak which we had covered at least an hour or so , so we decided to move along and wait for him at the peak . But this guy is great , we met him a long way while we were coming down , I wanted to take him from there itself but someone ( I guess it was Ajay who told him that if he doesn’t reach the top it would be worthless coming all the way --- crap crap crap ) and he listened to Ajay , went up and came down at LAAASSSSTTTT. Chalo he came down at least .
That night itself we decided of coming back , again we came to Mysore , say a beautifully lit Mysore palace and had dinner . On Mysore highway boom goes the tyre , and we see Ajay's tire has punctured , night 12 and nothing in vicinity , lucky only 3Kms distance was a puncture repair shop and we got help from him , it was around 3 in the morning that we reached Bangalore only to see Traffic police waiting for us , they checked all the documents and left us all taking Rs100. Pretty cheap right ;).
So the parts over , wait for my next post for some more treks and trips .

My journey as a trekker
All this started one fine day in college when we didnt have any work and was itching to go out and do something , I used to be in Pune then and I stayed with amol and Asish , it was 6th semester of MCA so the placements had already taken place . Most of the people from our college were out of town or were resting in thier homes, but we wanted to enjoy our final lap in MCA, because we knew that this time will never come back.
Amol was reading Pune Times and I was busy with a novel of mine , all of a sudden he asks me
"Trekking pe chalega kya?" , I was like "kya trekkein bhai , kaha jana hai" , he hands me the news paper and I see a small advertisement by trekdi group , who were going to some fort in the hills and had asked intrested people to call them up . I casually said yes and noted the number on my cell phone . It was already evening and both of us were feeling hungry so we went out for vada pav and sitting on a tapri we were doing some chit chat , when all of a sudden I suggested him of taking Rohini too along with us to the trek , he says ok and we call her up , as usual she thinks we are kidding and says yes I am ready .
The intresting thing was that the trek is the very next morning we are not even sure of going , we have not even called up the group leave alone the bag packing and the stuff and still we went in for the trek .
I called up one of the members of the group , I guess she was Himangi and she says yes you all can sure jaoin us from shivaji station in Pune , they were going to leave at around 6 in the morning I said yes we will and put down the phone .
The journey starts 5 in the morning , I was the laziest person in the whole class but somehow I managed to get up and even woke up Amol , kept some clothes in the bag and left for Rohini's house , amazing she was also ready and standing outside waiting for us , without wasting any time we went to Shivaginagar bus stand to find an enthusiastic bunch of ppl waiting for us . We had a basic introduction of each other and we were in a bus going to .... unfortunately it was so long ago (somewhere in 2005 april ) that I dont even remember the place we went to and I didnt have a camera to capture the pics .
But all I remember was that it was a two days trip where we covered two mountains .
In the first one Rnini was at the end and I was accompaning her all the way , she was feeling very tired (maybe she should have done some dieting before coming) and was on the verge of stopping, all the while I had to motivate her for some more , but unfortunately comes up a hurdle as if the trek was easier without it , but this one was a bit tought and was a bit dangerous too , one wrong foot and you were gone and it was hight too , and I hear Rohini saying you all go ahead I will stay here (if I could record her voice or could even have taken a snap it would have been great , cause words fail me ). My motivation was doing no good for her , luckily we had Ashwin with us , one of the guys from treking group , and he helped her in climbing up . But that was only the beginning of the battle , but after that I didnt hear Rohini cribbing or crying although she was slow in climbing , finally we reached up the mountain by 6 in the evening .
The group had already seen a pace where we would be spending our night . On top of the hill was an old fort with no one staying in it , we were going to stay there . We cooked our food and used candles for lightining as there was no electricity . and then when people were going to sleep I crept out and was gazing at the stars , it was an amazing site and I can never forget that .
Day 2:
Get up early in the morning and go in for the next peak , it was going down this one and then climbing on to the next , this time I wanted to enjoy the climp and moreover by now Rohini was confident so I started chatting with some new people as this was a good opportunity to know and meet someone new , this was not as high as the first one but was much more difficult even some of the experienced people were afaraid when the rocks became a hordle to reach the top but we finally reached up and had some fun there.
This was my first trekking experince and I enjoyed it so much that after thatI became a frequent traveller . Moreover this habit of mine lead me to photography too .
